And the station opens...

There were no flashing lights, no alarms. The doors to the quarantine chambers simply opened, the whoosh of seals breaking was the only fanfare.

Quarantine was on a quiet level of the station, a gently pulsing light set into the wall leading the chamber's temporary residents out into the station proper. Outside, station officials wandered by but paid no particular attention to the newcomers; new arrivals were nothing new to them, just a fact of life on Sanctuary. New people arrived in the chambers, station staff logged them, and the computers arranged everything else. So they went about their business, eyes glued to the screens they held.

Of course the newcomers weren't aware of any of this. Anyone who called out to the station staff was greeted with a wan smile and directed toward one of the many terminal screens lining the walls of the large open space between the central tower and the rest of the station.

The terminal screens asked for a fingerprint before offering any additional information. Their names flashed up with a map to their new home in the living quarters and some basic information on the currency contained in the chip in their hand and what it might buy them. A brief explanation of the silver communication unit followed, and then the news of the past twenty-four hours played. War on planets in a neighbouring system, the weather on a vacation world, sports scores for a game that seems a cross between lacrosse, hockey, and quidditch. Nothing of use, of course, nothing that could get them off the planet.

The quiet entrance to the living quarters was on one side of the atrium, and the sounds of a bustling marketplace that could not be contained came from a much wider opening on the other. People of all shapes, colours, and species walked through the space along with station officials and technicians using their tablet like screens, dark uniformed security officers chatting as they strolled their patrols.

The station carried on obliviously while the newcomers watched, each with only their credit chip, a place to live, and a basic outfit. Clearly that was all the welcome they were to expect; what happened next would be up to them.

"Nick Gautier," Nick responded with a matching smirk and an extended hand. "You look like a man well versed in showing up in places you've never been before and have no way of voluntarily leaving. Unlike a few of these poor souls who look like they've been beat up with very soft hammers."

"I wouldn't say there's no way of leaving. Just that I haven't figured it out yet," Jack replied with a confidence that had to come from years of surviving scrapes just like this. History told him he'd survive and he'd yet to be proved wrong. Even if he had to lie underground, choking on earth and dying again and again, dying a million times, there was always a way out.

Surely here would be no different.

"I wish you all the luck." Nick responded with a nod of his chin towards him. "But I've been in two places just like this over the past five years. I've seen more than a few drive themselves half crazy trying to find ways out. So far, I haven't seen anyone leave of their own accord. I've only seen them just up and poof out, back to another dimension or the one where they originally came from."

"Well that's weird," Jack said with the authority of someone used to weird. He gave a one shouldered shrug and cocked his head to the side. "All I'm hearing you say is there's a way out. Back to my own dimension? Poof? Gonna make that happen," he decided.

"They went poof, yes, but I didn't say they did it of their own accord," Nick clarified. "The only time anyone left was when whatever power sent them there decided to send them back. But far be it from me to piss on your party. By all means, commence with poof-age and it's been a pleasure meeting you."

"Poofage? You know, there was a time that would have been an insult," Jack replied, a bright grin to match his sparkling eyes. "If I'm going to have to wait for the powers-that-be then so be it. Until then I may as well make friends."

"Yeah, well, there was a time when buying a wife for two goats and a camel was perfectly normal, too," Nick countered with a wink, "doesn't make either thing right. But no offense intended to anyone identifying with the word poof, for whatever reason. So. Where are you from?" Nick paused, thought for a second, "or should I ask when instead?"

"Where is Earth, when is 2006. Something tells me that's not the case here, but it wouldn't be the first time I've found myself well out of time and space," he chuckled.

"You're a funny guy. I like you," he added then, chucking him on the arm and smiling brightly. The way he said it it was almost as if Jack's liking him was the best gift he could have given.

There was something about the guy, his easy smile, his sense of humor, that reminded Nick of a few different Dark Hunters and it was enough to make him feel a little less out of touch, a little less home sick.

"We have Earth in common at the very least, but I'm still not entirely sure of when I'm from. Something in that range though," Nick responded with a half shrug. "Someone's monkeying around with time in my world, and in a way that's directly affecting my life, and my memories. Good times," he finished with a laugh.

Jack's easy smile faded and a hardness came to his eyes. No more crinkles at the corners of his eyes, not even a curve to his perfect lips.

"Bilis Manger?" he asked, a sick feeling taking hold of him by the balls and jerking until his back was ramrod straight. The man had manipulated time, manipulated his team, had finessed the world into what he wanted it to be all to engineer the release of Abaddon. It had been a battle that had killed Jack and he had no doubt that Bilis was crafty enough to try again and again until he achieved his goal.

"I'm sorry?" Nick asked, frowning at the sudden chill around the guy and the change to his emotional output. If Nick's demon had been anywhere close to the surface, it would have been tying on a bib and asking for seconds.

"What is a bilis manger? Is that anything like the whole baby Jesus in a manger thing?"

"No? No. No, he's a man," Jack said with a sharp intensity. "A man that can control time, shift through it, control it to a certain degree. He doesn't need tech to do it, either. He just...steps through," he explained.

"Right. Well, you don't have to worry. The someone fucking with time in my little slice of the world is, by all indications, me. My future self has decided to change his present by changing our past. So. That's exciting, when you start remembering things you know happened differently. Between that and the happy fun time of being trapped in a few different dimensions over the past few years; let's just say it's a small miracle I'm sane."

He gave a slight shrug, then refocused on what he'd been told. "The guy you're talking about, though, sounds like a lot of fun. Except not."

[personal profile] cpt_harkness 2016-05-16 02:12 am (UTC)(link)

"Except not," he nodded in agreement. His smile slowly flickered back into place and Jack slipped back into the comfortable familiarity of flirtation. "So what now? You found your bunk yet?"

Subtle.

"Not yet. Mostly just milling around like a lost sheep because all the cool kids are doing it," Nick shot back, smiling wider in response to the flirt.

"Sheep?" he asked, looking around like there might actually be sheep. There weren't and he shrugged. "They seem to know where they're going. I've looked around some. You want a tour guide?"

"Why not? Never hurts to figure out which way is up and where the food is when you're in a new place," Nick commented.
